I have a friend, who, in spite of everything in today's world, has managed to raise some very well mannered children. They are polite, say please and thank you, and are respectful of their elders.
A couple of days ago, one of them addressed me as "Miss Jean".
I hear some of you going, "well, that's a Southern thing." Indeed it is. We're proud of our manners down here. I don't have a problem with that.
My problem lies in the fact that when I was a kid, I addressed my friend Lynne's three unmarried aunts as Miss Lennie, Miss Annie Bell and Miss Amy. And they seemed to be ancient at the time. Even today I address an older lady at our church as Miss Hazel. Miss Hazel is, to put it mildly, on up there in years.
So when did this happen?? I know I blogged recently about turning 50. Frankly, 50 doesn't seem all that different than 49, except that AARP keeps sending me stuff (and considering their frightfully liberal agenda, they can just keep it, thankyouverymuch). In my mind, I just don't fit the "Miss Jean" template. I have spiky hair; I drive a Hummer; I listen to an iPod.
I'm guessing I should just take it as a sign of respect and leave it there. I don't *feel* ancient (at least not at this point in tax season anyway). **sigh**
In other news....
Remember back in December when it was Hummer 1, Honda 0?? Ran into the lady whose car I hit at The Whole Nine Yarns on Sunday. Asked her when she was having her car fixed, since I hadn't been contacted to pay my deductible. Funny story, she said. Turns out after I hit her, the car got totaled by somebody else, so there was nothing to fix. Yeah... first thing Monday morning I called the insurance agent to share that little tidbit.
Started on the February TWNY sock guild sock:
Pic may be a little blurry... but I was kind of in a hurry when I took it.... :) Anyway, it's a toe up pattern called "Spring Peepers". Isn't the yarn pretty?? I love toe up socks.
Richard managed to capture this photographic evidence of Sunday afternoons around here:
Rumor has it that the grey haired woman sleeping in the picture is Miss Jean. There's a darn cute dog with her at any rate.

When did this happen??

It would be so nice if all problems went away like that pesky Honda one. More $$ for stash!! ;-) I think your evidence of Sunday afternoon is perfectly acceptable, btw.
First, I've been Miss Teresa at church for years. Apparently that's what comes from hanging with "da youts". Some of them are *gasp* now grown with kids of their own and I'm still Miss Teresa to them. And let's remember I'm a couple of years younger then you. They also still think I'm kinda cool, so don't worry about that.
Second...the picture is priceless and I like your idea of Sunday afternoons. But you'll have to be awake soon, some of the races start early!
I thought it was bad enough being called "ma'am" by college kids...and Michael was shocked to not be carded last night.... =)
I'm only in my mid-thirties and I cringe when someone calls me ma'am. I don't think I look bad for my age! Certainly not 'ma'am'-ish.
How was Boortz's book? I've read the Fair Tax book he and Linder wrote, awesome read if you haven't. I was curious about his book that you've just read. I love Boortz, there are times he and I don't see eye to eye, but they are few and far between!
The "Miss" doesn't bother me nearly as much as ma'am or "auntie". I even settle for aunt.... but it really freaks me out when my neices call me "mom" accidentally. BTW - my sister's husband can't tell us apart on the phone - thus the neice confusion as to whom the parent is/should be ;-)
For NAPS on Sunday, what's wrong with every other day of the week. Isn't that trying enough as well. I think that as you grow older it should be mandated - kinda like back in Kindergarten (for those of you old enough to remember that we did that back then!).
